1914/15 Star and Plaque to 18925 Pte. Harry Smith. Highland Light Infantry.

Harry Smith was born in 1897 in Christchurch Lancashire, to George Smith a Carpenter and Ada Smith.

The 1901 census shows Harry to be living at number 24 Port Frederick? Street, with his brothers Alfred (2) and Sydney (5 months) as well as his parents. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists his mother as Ada Marsden and makes no mention of his father George. Possibly George died and Ada re married.

 Harry joined up in Salford and became a member of the 12^th Battalion Highland Light Infantry. The 12^th landed at Boulogne on 11^th July 1915, Harry’s MIC indicates he arrived on 11^th July. Harry was thus entitled to the 1914/14 Trio.

Harry was sadly killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Loos 25^th September 1915. The 12^th we part of the first wave, Harry was most probably KIA while taking Hill 70.The HLI lost a total of 553 officers and other ranks at Loos
