 Archibald Douglas was born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, on 4th October 1897. He first served as a Private in the 14th London Regiment attesting in January 1916. 

Douglas served in France from August 1916 and was wounded in December 1916, and subsequently discharged to a commission into the Cameroon Highlanders on 29th May 1917. 

He returned to France on 6th September 1917 with the 5th Bn, received a mention in despatches on 28th December 1918, and was awarded an MC gazetted on 30th July 1919

 ‘For most conspicuous gallantry and fine leadership throughout the operations from 28th September to 3rd October 1918, when in command of a company. On 28th September, when his company was held up by heavy machine-gun and rifle fire from a pillbox on Anzac Ridge, he worked one platoon round the left flank and then led the assault, which resulted in the capture of the position and the destruction of the garrison. His leadership and example to the men were splendid.’

In the post-war years, he served in Kurdistan and rose to the rank of Major by 1938. In 1940 he was part of the BEF, serving as a Major in the 2nd Bn, taking part in fighting in Belgium; he was evacuated at Dunkirk.  

He retired in 1948 due to ill health.

 Arthur Douglas was born in 1892 in Blantyre, Scotland. He attested in Hamilton joining the 5th Reserve Cavalary. Transferred to the 1st bn Seaforth Highlanders, he landed in France on 15th July 1915 and is entitled to a 1914/15 Star. He was then posted to Mesopotamia and was sadly killed in action on 7th January 1916. He is remembered on the Basar memorial.
