Richard Millar was born in Great Waltham, Essex, on 8th April 1828. He joined the 44th Foot in 1846, going on to serve for 17 years and 37 days. 
 
Miller served a total of 12 years and 10 months abroad in Malta, Gibraltar, Crimea, East indies and China. 
 
He was present at the engagements at Alma, Inkermann and Sebastopol, which earned him the Crimea Medal with corresponding bars. Miller is also entitled to a China Medal. 
 
Miller was discharged sometime after earning the China Medal. On 8th November 1861, he joined the 1st Foot with service number 902. Suffering from Consumption, he was discharged in October 1864. This illness was likely the cause of his death in 1865.
