Jonathan Nicholson was born in Langley Park in County Durham. He attested at Durham on 21st September 1914, joining the 8th Bn of the Durham Light Infantry. 
 
He landed in France on 8th August 1915 and was promoted to CQMS on 1st May 1916 in the field. Nicholson survived the war and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, which was gazetted on 18th January 1919.
