QSA to Pte Henry ASC / Killed on the Somme with 1st SAI / Buried Warlencourt

Queens South Africa Medal, bars Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Belfast. Correctly engraved 15975 Pte A B Henry ASC.

 Alfred Beech Henry was born in Hurachi, India in 1882. Aged 18 on the 12th of May 1900, he attested at Plymouth, joining the Army Service Corps; in civilian life, he had been a Clerk. 

Henry saw service during the Second Boer War and earned the Queens South Africa Medal with bars Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Belfast. The medal and bars are confirmed on the roll, he was also entitled to the King South Africa Medal. In total, he spent two years and 183 days in Africa. 

On the 10th of November 1902, he purchased his discharge for £18; on the 18th of November 1904, he was refunded £12 when he rejoined with service number S/22448. 

He was discharged on the 15th of November 1913 due to no longer being physically fit. 

His service papers make note of his parents, John and Emma Henry. Alfred joined the 1st South African Infantry with service number 8495. Part of 'C' Coy, he was sadly killed in action on the 18th of October 1916. He was laid to rest in Warlencourt British Cemetery.

The rationale for the connection to SAI service is that he has a pretty unique name, the correct age, and his parents' names noted in his service papers.
