Charles Adlard was born in Liverpool on 15th June 1881. He joined the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1900, becoming Private 7082 in the 1st Battalion. 
 
He served in the Boer War with the rank of Corporal and earned the Queens South Africa Medal with bars Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal and South Africa 1902. The medal and bars are confirmed on the roll. Service in India followed after promotion to Sergeant, and he was awarded the IGS with bar Northwest Frontier 1908.
 
During the Great War, he was Mentioned in Despatches, Gazetted
24th December 1918 and awarded the Military Medal, Gazetted 14th May 1919. He is entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal and was awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal in 1920.
 
From 1922 until 1929, he was a Lieutenant Quartermaster with the 7th Bn and retired from the Reserve of Officers in 1936. At the time of the 1939 census, he was living in Newburn, Northumberland and working as a Road Foreman for the Highway Department. 
 
Charles passed away in March 1944. 
 
His MM, IGS and LSGC were sold in Noonans in September 2003.
