William Dalby was born in Middlesbrough in 1895. He enlisted on the 13^th of January 1914, giving his occupation as skilled Laborer.  He became a member of the 3^rd Bn Yorkshire Regiment.

He was constantly in trouble for being absent and on one once occasion forging his commanding officer's signature on a pass.

He served in France with the 8^th Bn from 20^th of March 1915 until the 25^th of July 1916 when he was wounded in the right ankle.

 Once he was recovered he was compulsory posted to a Field Butchery, with whom he served for the remainder of the war. On discharge he gave his address as 1 Benedict Street North Ormesby.
