Edwin Young was born in South Shields on the 29th of May 1897. In civilian life Edwin worked as a miner and resided at 10 Stanley Terrace, Tyne Dock, South Shields.

He enlisted in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve on the 2nd of August 1915. He served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front where he was take prisoner during the German Spring Offensive of 1918.
