Clark was born in Whitley Bay, Northumberland, on 26th January 1935. He first joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He served in Kenya during the Mau Mau Rebellion and in Oman during the Arabian Peninsula operations.
 
Clark transferred to the Royal Corps of Transport and saw further service in Borneo, Northern Ireland and then on United Nations Peacekeeping duties in Cyprus.
 
Awarded the LSGc as a Warrant Officer Class 2, he was discharged on the 2nd February 1990.
