Sold with a number of original pieces of ephemera, detailing his service in the Royal Observer Corps, his award of the BEM and a photograph of the recipient.

 

Direct from the family, and the first time this group has been offered for sale.

 

Arthur Thornton served with 4th West Riding Artillery during the Great War, landing France on the 15th of April 1915. In the later stages of the war he served with the Military Police, he was shot and gassed which affected him for the rest of his life.  

Back in civilian life he was Postmaster at Saxton, near Tadcaster.

In 1920 he joined the Special Constabulary, before transferring to the Royal Observer Corps when it was formed in 1937. He served as Chief Observer at Saxton throughout the Second World war and was awarded the British Empire Medal for his service in 1946.
