Edward and Norman Anderson were both born in Middlesbrough. Edward in 1902 and Norman in 1913. The sons of Gustaf Anderson, who was born in Stockholm in 1881; he changed his name on moving to England.

 

The family lived on Adam Street and Gresham Road in Middlesbrough. 

 

Like his father, Edward became a Merchant Seaman, serving in the latter stages of the Great War and during WW2. 

 

Norman emigrated to New Zealand and joined the NZEF. He rose to the rank of sergeant, and on December 5th 1941, he boarded SS Chakdina at Tobruk Harbour. He was likely being evacuated due to being wounded, and the destination was Egypt. 

 

SS Chakdina was sunk by an enemy torpedo bomber on the evening of the 5th. Anderson was one of 89 New Zealand soldiers killed in the sinking. He is remembered on the El Alamein Memorial. 

 

Their father Gustaf had drowned in Kirkwall harbour while serving on SS Disperser on April 14th 1940.
