Albert Lyne was born at Ringwood, Hampshire on the 13 July 1877, the son of William and Love Lyne. 

 At the time of the 1881 census, the family were living at 'The Kennels', in the hamlet of Sandford near Ringwood. By 1891, the family had moved to the village of Ripley, with Albert, now aged 13, working as a general labourer.

 Lyne joined the 3rd Battalion (militia) of the Hampshire Regiment aged 18 in March 1896. In June, he opted to join the regular army and was posted to the 2nd Bn. 

Transfered to the 1st Bn in 1898, he served in the following locations; at home from June 1896 until February 1897, in India from February 1897 until February 1903, and in Aden from February 1903 until June 1903.

He decided to extend his service to 12 years with the regular army and saw active service in Somaliland from June 1903 until July 1904. Lyne was present at the Battle of Jidballi, the following account is taken from the Royal Hampshires website;

' By January 1904, General Egerton, now commanding in Somaliland, decided to advance on Jidballi, which was 40 miles east of Eil Dab where the Mullah’s men were gathering. The ensuing battle for the Hampshire Regiment lasted only 40 minutes from the opening fire, as the trained soldiers were more accurate shooters than the Somali troops, who retreated with British mounted troops in pursuit.’

 Upon his return to Great Britain in 1904, he opted to extend his service for 21 years. As part of the BEF, he went to France in August 1914. In May 1915, his medical status changed, and he permanently served in the barracks rather than the front line. In 1917, he was classified as permanently unfit for frontline active service, he didn't return home from France until after November 1918. 

Albert passed away in 1956.
