A Scare Greece ELAS Operations Military Medal group to L/Cpl D Munro Cameron Highlanders

David McCombie Munro was born in Inverness on the 26th of June 1920.

While serving as a Lance Corporal with 2nd Bn The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, 11th Indian Infantry Brigade, 4th Indian Division, in Greece, he was awarded the Military Medal. The award was announced in the London Gazette on the 18th of September 1945. The citation is as follows;

'L/Cpl. Munro, as a key Jeep Driver in the Bn, was at the forefront of all the Bn actions against ELAS in Greece throughout December 1944 and January 1945. During this period, when British Garrissons in the Peloponnese were striving to the utmost to maintain the Status Quo, Reece parties and small numbers of men were being constantly stopped, sniped at, or taken prisoner by ELAS forces. No vehicle was safe on country roads without an escort. Every corner was a danger. Although knowing this full well L/Cpl. Munro cheerfully and enthusiastically undertook many drives of the most hazardous nature, frequently unescorted. On one occasion, after fighting had eventually broken out, he, in company with another jeep, had to drive deep into ELAS territory near Patras in order to negotiate for the release of one officer and 7 Ors of the Bn then held prisoner. These jeeps were violently attacked on a mountain road by some 20 ELAS and came under intense fire from every type of small arms, which forced them to stop. The party was roughly searched, and only prompt action by L/Cpl Munro prevented the Greek interpreter from being shot on the spot. Later when the party were being taken into the hills, L/Cpl Munro was left in charge of the jeeps with the instructions not to allow them to fall into ELAS hands. He carried out these instructions in spite of a show of force and violent threats. On two other occasions, he cheerfully undertook deep recces into ELAS territory, during one of which he was ambushed by ELAS forces who held the surrounding hills. He rapidly turned his vehicle amidst the most intense small-arms fire, his vehicle being hit again and again. No praise is too high for his devotion to duty, steadfastness and initiative during the most trying of periods when cool judgment could only save incidents and lives. These are just two examples of what were almost daily ocurrances. None could have done the job better than L/Cpl Munro'.

David survived the war and passed away in July 1986.
